Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Six (6) years of professional land surveying experience
  • Three (3) years of supervisory, managerial and administrative experience.
  • Licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor in accordance with Florida Statutes Chapter 472.
OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies necessary for success in the target position.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess valid Florida driver's license.
  • May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.  Position may be designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Environment/Physical Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying, equipment and techniques involved in the performance of land surveying assignments.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of GIS database.
  • Skill in using land surveying instruments and equipment.
  • Skill in preparing maps and survey legal documents.
  • Ability to supervise and perform evaluation of subordinates.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret land surveying data.
  • Ability to perform land surveying calculation.
  • Ability to use AutoCAD or equivalent computer aided drafting software.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate technical information verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Job Description

The City Surveyor is the highest authority of survey activities for the City of Lakeland. This is a State licensed Professional Surveyor and Mapper with supervisory and administrative responsibilities to oversee and coordinate activities of subordinates and private sector surveyors performing surveys for the City of Lakeland.

Essential Functions and Additional Functions

  • Serves as the surveying section supervisor, directing and managing the City’s surveying program and assignments.  Coordinates activities of the section with other City divisions and departments, governmental agencies, private land surveyors, and the public.
  • Plans scope of work and direct survey activities for City design and construction projects.
  • Determines public land corners and alignments related to right-of-way maps, land plants and property legal descriptions.
  • Reviews subdivision plats and surveys for accuracy and conformance to established standards.
  • Reviews consultant proposals and fee negotiations of professional land surveyor contracts with the City.  Manages survey contract services and ensure compliance of contracts.
  • Serves as an expert witness at hearings and condemnation proceedings for the City.  Provides professional advice in resolving unusual problems and improving work methods.
  • Continues densification and maintenance of the City horizontal and vertical control network for use by the public and private sector.
