Your 60-Minute Year-End Career Tune-Up
The end of the year is a natural moment for reflection, but also a perfect time to make quick, meaningful updates that strengthen your job search. You don’t need a whole weekend or a deep overhaul. In fact, a focused, one-hour tune-up now can leave you better prepared for January, when hiring typically picks up. Here’s how to make the most of 60 minutes.
Minute 1–10: Update Your Résumé
Focus on clarity, not perfection. Add any new accomplishments, certifications, or responsibilities from the past year. Even small achievements—learning a new system, improving a process, leading a short-term project—can position you as proactive and growth-oriented. Keep the format simple and easy to quickly scan. This means stick to one font, bold headings (but don’t overdo it by bolding, capitalizing, and underlining), and use bullet lists.
Minute 11–20: Refresh Your LinkedIn Profile
Start with your headline. Does it communicate who you are and what you offer? Update your “About” section with a brief summary of your strengths. Add recent projects or volunteer work. Are you having holiday photos taken by a professional photographer? If so, ask for a plain backdrop and an individual headshot so you can update your profile photo. A few small tweaks can improve your visibility and help recruiters find you.
Minute 21–30: Clean Up Your Digital Presence
Search for your name online and ensure the results reflect the professional image you want to portray. Check your social media privacy settings. Remove outdated profiles, old résumés, or anything that might cause confusion.
Minute 31–45: Clarify Your Career Goals
Write down the types of roles you’re targeting, the agencies and departments you’re interested in working for, and the skills you want to highlight. You don’t have to map out the next five years—simply identify what kind of job would make you feel energized and appreciated. This clarity will guide your applications in January.
Minute 46–60: Set Up One Simple System
Create a basic tracking sheet for applications, networking contacts, and deadlines. You may also want to build a template cover letter you can quickly customize. A simple system reduces stress and speeds up your search.
A one-hour investment now means you’ll enter the new year organized, confident, and ready for the opportunities ahead.
