Job Requirements

Minimum qualifications

  • Must be licensed (or eligible to be licensed) as a Peace Officer in the State of Minnesota, successfully pass POST out-of-state officer or military reciprocity exam, or currently be a student who anticipates taking the POST eligibility test by July 1, 2026.
  • Must be able to meet POST Minimum Selection Standards.
  • Possession of an Associate of Arts or Science degree (or higher) in law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field.
Preferred qualifications

  • Previous experience as a licensed peace officer.
  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field.
  • Working knowledge or fluency in a second language.
  • Documented volunteer experience with a focus on working with the public.
  • Successful candidates must also possess a valid MN Class D Driver’s License and have a good driving record as well as satisfactorily pass a thorough criminal background check, psychological examination, and physical examination.

Job Description

The City of Fairmont is seeking a full-time Police Officer to protect the citizens of Fairmont through the prevention and detection of crime. Work is conducted under the supervision of the police sergeant on duty. Please see the corresponding job description for a full list of job duties and expectations.

Fairmont is a city with a population of 10,000+ located in southern Minnesota at the intersection of I-90 and Hwy 15. Set amidst the prairie, it is surrounded by farmland and is roughly 15 square miles in size. In addition to its strong agricultural ties, Fairmont is home to a chain of five beautiful lakes and has earned the nickname “City of Lakes”. The community is very pro-law enforcement and supports the services the Fairmont Police Department (FPD) provides.

There are currently 17 full-time licensed officers. FPD also employs two full-time licensed officers to work part-time hours to help fill shifts and cover special assignments. The department offers prospective candidates a wide variety of rewarding assignments and specialized positions.

This position typically works 11.5-hour shifts. The schedule would consist of two weekends on, two weekends off.
