- Master’s degree in planning, public administration, business administration, law, engineering, architecture or closely related field.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of related experience.
- Minimum of three (5) years’ experience in supervisory/administrative leadership capacity
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
The Planning, Inspections and Community Development Director is required to be committed to the mission statement, vision, and values of the City of Dover. The Director reports directly to the City Manager and will oversee and direct the Planning and Inspections Department, which includes Planning, Building Inspections, Code Enforcement, Licensing and Permitting, and the Fire Marshal’s Office.
Job Summary:
The Planning, Inspections and Community Development Director will be responsible for directing planning activities and developing comprehensive and multi-year plans. The Director will work with the community coordinating local and regional planning as well as assist the City Manager by providing planning input for economic development. A successful candidate will monitor and research trends and new methodology in order to develop and enhance City planning and inspection processes. The Director will monitor and enforce city codes and ordinances and make suggestions for change as needed.
Job Responsibilities
- Supervise staff while establishing standards and recommending training and evaluating work.
- Develop goals and objectives and procedures for departmental activities and programs in consultation with regulatory agencies or elected/appointed officials, the City Manager and others as needed.
- Develop and enhance City planning/inspection processes and activities.
- Monitor and interpret codes and ordinances for enforcement.
- Develop comprehensive and multi-year plans to foster planned and coordinated growth and development.
- Advise and consult with elected/appointed officials, commissions, federal/state regulatory agencies on problems, strategies, policies, and procedures related to planning and inspections services.
- Represent the city on regional and local boards or committees.
- Develop and defend department budgets and expenditures.
- Occasional visits to the field.
- Performs other duties and special projects as needed.
