Job Requirements
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
- graduation from high school, and
- two and a half (2 ½) years of experience in the care, feeding and handling of animals in an animal control agency, a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, cat or dog boarding facility or other related facility, and
- possession of a valid State of Hawai‘i driver’s license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver’s license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.)
Job Description
Supervises and participates in the maintenance of safe and sanitary facilities for shelter animals and the public; processes and cares for shelter animals; and performs other related duties.
There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Animal Control and Protection Agency in Kailua-Kona.
The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
Special Working Conditions: Exposure to hazardous, filthy, and/or obnoxious conditions.
Examples of Duties
- Supervises, participates, trains, and develops staff in the daily cleaning of kennels, cages, and public areas, following proper disease control protocol to ensure a sterile environment.
- Supervises, participates, and trains staff in the maintenance of sanitary conditions in animal enclosures and kennel areas, maintains clean and organized work environment.
- Assigns and reviews the work of subordinates; provides input in regard to performance evaluations and personnel actions including hiring, transferring, promoting, disciplinary actions and termination.
- Stocks areas; spot-clean kennels and public areas throughout the day; cleans, folds, and stocks kennel laundry throughout the shelter.
- Cleans and disinfects food and water bowls and other utensils.
- Observes and monitors behavior of animals; distinguishes and reports symptoms of sickness or unusual behavior to appropriate staff.
- May assist the public in identifying a missing pet; may assist with the reunification of a pet with their owner.
- Maintains equipment in working condition; reports equipment or supply needs to supervisor.
- Assists in the evaluation and selection of incoming animals to be made available for adoption; performs and records health checks in accordance with proper procedures and protocols.
- Uses a computer to access, input, and retrieve work-related information; maintains case files and records for the assigned program and produces complete and concise reports.
- Humanely and effectively handles and kennels animals; identifies shelter animals with appropriate tags or bands before kenneling.
- Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion.
- Makes regular checks of shelter facility; beautifies shelter and informs supervisors of maintenance or repair needs.
- Immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any major incidents requiring special attention; practices extreme caution in caring for animals; enforces and complies with safety regulations.
- Ensures all kennels have identification cards completed and posted.
- Attends and participates in shelter meetings, community and educational presentations, and events.
- May operate a motor vehicle to perform work-related travel.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
