Job Description

The Town of Stowe is seeking an experienced and collaborative Finance Director to serve as chief financial officer who will lead the Town’s finance team and be an integral part of the municipality’s leadership team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a municipal finance professional who wants to do more than manage numbers. You’ll help turn financial information into meaningful insights, support sound decision-making, promote transparency and accountability, and serve as a trusted partner in managing the Town’s finances.

The successful candidate will also benefit from a thoughtful transition with the Town’s current Finance Director, who is preparing for retirement. This provides a unique opportunity to learn the organization, build relationships, and ensure continuity while bringing your own ideas and expertise to the role.

If you’re passionate about public service, enjoy solving complex financial challenges, and want your work to have a visible impact on a community, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

As Finance Director, you will provide leadership and oversight for the Town’s financial operations, including:

  • Lead the Town’s financial management and help ensure its long-term fiscal health and sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with GASB, GAAP, applicable laws and regulations, and Town financial policies and procedures.
  • Lead the development, administration, monitoring, and reporting of the Town’s annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Prepare and present financial reports, analysis, forecasts, and recommendations to Town leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Provide financial information and analysis to support strategic planning and informed decision-making.
  • Coordinate and participate in the Town’s annual audit process, including preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Provide oversight of payroll, accounts payable, and other core financial processes.
  • Monitor revenues, expenditures, cash flow, investments, and other key financial indicators.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen financial controls, improve processes, and increase operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with department heads, elected officials, staff, auditors, and community stakeholders on financial matters.
  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to Town leadership while promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of public resources.
