Job Requirements

Knowledge of principles, methods, materials and tools used in public works projects, safety measures, precautions and hazards involved with the principles of operation of public works equipment, and welding and fabrication. Ability to

  • Operate various public works equipment and vehicles, including light and heavy equipment
  • Learn and perform basic welding and fabrication techniques
Required Certifications/Licenses:
  • A valid Nevada driver’s license or ability to obtain & maintain one
  • Current possession of, or ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within 4 months of hire
Training & Experience Must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent and possess substantial experience in operating and maintaining tools, equipment and vehicles common to municipal public works functions or a combination of training, education and/or experience, which demonstrates the desired skills, knowledge and abilities.   Tools and Equipment Used: Testing equipment, voltmeters, ammeters, vehicle lifts, jacks, pick-up truck, tractors, jackhammer, paint striping equipment, chainsaws, pumps, irrigation systems, miscellaneous hand and power tools, cement finishing work, janitorial equipment, front-end loaders, dump trucks, snowplows, bulldozer, and assorted other construction/maintenance equipment and trucks.

Job Description

General Purpose of Position

Performs a variety of journeyman level work consisting of light and heavy manual maintenance functions related to public works, including streets, sewer, parks, cemetery, building maintenance and water systems. Operates and performs routine maintenance on a variety of light and heavy equipment/machines in the Public Works Department.

Essential Duties and Functions: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists.  Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions).

  • Operates light and heavy equipment in tight situations, removes snow from city streets.
  • Performs minor unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance i.e., custodial, maintenance, painting, plumbing, carpentry and other trades work, in open spaces or in city structures such as restrooms, shelters, maintenance sheds, etc.
  • Performs functions involving manual labor i.e., dig ditches, patching potholes with hot and cold mix, cleaning drains, building fences, installing and repairing signs, and paints.
  • Operates backhoe, excavation equipment and trucks used to maintain streets and alleys.
  • Performs repair and minor street construction; slopes and cleans ditches; spreads gravel and fill on streets as required.
  • Connects water and sewer lines, takes meter readings, make utility line repairs; performs turn-ons and turn-offs of city water; cleans screens on sewer influent; prepares and transports water samples to designated testing facility.
  • Maintains and repairs ground level sprinkler systems.
  • Sweeps, washes, paints and repairs public works buildings/facilities.
  • Welds and fabricates steel and aluminum as necessary for repair and maintenance of city equipment.
  • Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, watering and mowing of city property.
  • Assists the Public Works Director or Supervisor in controlling pest and weed problems.
  • May be responsible for ordering of paper products and janitorial supplies when required and maintaining all city buildings supplies.
  • Other duties assigned by the Director or Foreman (Supervisor).
