Director of Planning and Development
Graduation from a four-year college or university with emphasis on urban planning or engineering, with and advance degree desired; experience with municipal planning; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

We are seeking a strategic and experienced professional to lead our Planning and Development Department. This position reports to the City Manager, and is responsible for the leadership, management, and strategic direction of the municipality’s planning, land use, and development functions. This role plays an integral part of shaping the future growth and development of the community.
Key Responsibilities
Establishes guidelines and is responsible for the review and verification of all applications for subdivision and shoreland zoning permits; advises applicants and Planning Board of application status and compliance with ordinances; coordinates review with appropriate municipal departments.
- Coordinate with local, regional, and state partners while focusing on initiatives that deliver real value to the City and maintain or strengthen relationships with the business community, developers, and residents through clear communication and responsiveness.
- Drafts planning ordinances, prepares departmental budget and represents the City on various regional planning agencies.
- Identify and pursue grants and other funding stream opportunities that support community and economic development goals.
- Makes recommendations to Planning Board for appropriate action or additional conditions to be imposed.
- Collects land use data for use in preparation of Comprehensive Plan and development of zoning regulations and provide clear, practical recommendations to the City Manager and City Council on planning and development matters.
- Attends and staffs Planning Board meetings; prepares appropriate notices and supporting documents; prepares and distributes meeting minutes.
- Contribute to cross departmental collaboration to align economic and planning activities.
- Prepares and drafts long range plans and other special projects as requested.
- Assists and provides technical assistance to various City committees and Boards including the Downtown Revitalization Committee and Industrial Council.
- Performs related work as required.
