Job Requirements

The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with an Associate’s Degree in civil engineering and/or technology, five years’ experience in land surveying, and experience in construction work and layout. Ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing from 15 to 25 pounds. Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions. Experience with using Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, GIS software and other related software is desirable.

Job Description

Supervises engineering survey party for Public Works construction projects, map making, and land valuation; and inspects road, sewer, and sidewalks construction work.

General Duties: Receives oral instructions or work order from the Director of Public Works/Town Engineer. Plans and organizes work according to standard procedure. Supervises engineering survey party as Party Chief to determine exact location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours of earth’s surface to secure data used for public works construction, map making, land valuation, or other purposes. Verifies by calculations accuracy of survey data secured. Drafts original and updated property maps from current and previous maps, and report. Stakes sites for construction work by town maintenance forces and for contracted construction projects. Assists in costing estimates for construction projects and bonding of contractors. Performs advanced mathematical computations in survey, design, and estimating work. Performs administrative and fieldwork as directed by Director of Public Works/Town Engineer. Acts as administrative liaison to CBYD in the absence of the Director of Public Works/Town Engineer. Responsible for all mark outs.

Additional Duties: Inspects public works projects for conformity with construction design, materials, specifications, and related codes. Inspects construction of roads and sidewalks and related right-of-way requirements. Enforces codes related to construction or repair work. Assists the public by providing information and technical assistance regarding permits, construction activity, or rightsof-way.
