Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience 

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university
  • At least three (3) years of work experience in advanced animal care and control, and zoonosis, and at least one (1) year of supervising personnel.
Proof of TB Test/Screening will be required to be presented prior to employment

Required Licenses or Certifications 

  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • Animal Control Advance Training Certification from DSHS (Texas Department of State and Health Services) must be obtained within six (6) months of employment**
  • State of Texas Pesticide License must be obtained within six (6) months of employment**
**Continued employment is contingent on successfully obtaining required certification(s) and/or license(s) within the specified period of time indicated above from time of hire. As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.

Job Description

Supervise field operation to make sure that staff is following City and departmental guidelines are being followed. In addition, education of the general public on rabies as part of the program of prevention and education.

Essential Functions/ Job Competencies/ Physical Requirements

  • Crew leader-investigator who assists in supervising all animal control (zoonosis) operations, personnel, and disease surveillance.
  • Assists with the administration of office, program, and staff.
  • Direct supervision of personnel in the field and operations, and maintains a professional, service-oriented crew.
  • Conducts training on preventive measures, and assures proper safe use of equipment.
  • Establish and maintains an effective working relationship with the public; projects a positive and professional image of the animal control service.
  • Team leads the examination of dog licenses for validity and issues citations or summons to the owners whose animals are in violation.
  • Surveys houses to ensure that three month old dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies.
  • Enforces the humane animal control restraints are practiced; ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing animal control.
  • Monitors and supervises the quarantine, impoundment and enforcement of rabies control ordinances.
  • Monitors dangerous animal cases, and assures all reports are maintained properly and manages that all investigations are conducted properly.
  • Oversees the educational programs on rabies and vector control.
  • Assures all staff receives appropriate training and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
