Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Social Work, or a related field is required. Candidates with a Master’s or Doctorate may qualify at a higher range.
Experience:

  • Six years of increasingly responsible experience in social services, including two years of significant administrative managerial experience in a large public agency.
Special Requirements:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

Mono County is seeking an innovative and collaborative leader to serve as Deputy Director of Health and Human Services – Social Services. This executive-level role offers a unique opportunity to shape and strengthen vital social services that directly impact the well-being of our community, including public assistance, child and adult services, public guardian/administrator, and senior services.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced and mission-driven public sector leader with a deep understanding of social services administration and a proven ability to lead complex, multi-program operations within a health and human services environment. They bring substantial experience overseeing public assistance, child and adult services, or related programs, along with demonstrated success in executive-level fiscal management, policy development, and personnel leadership. This individual exercises sound judgment, discretion, and initiative, and is comfortable navigating state and federal regulations, legislative changes, and politically sensitive environments. The successful candidate is a collaborative and communicative leader who builds trust with staff, community partners, and elected officials; values continuous improvement; and is committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate services to diverse communities.

Examples of Duties

The Deputy Director of Health and Human Services – Social Services is an at-will, senior executive leadership position responsible for organizing, coordinating, and implementing a wide range of Social Services programs within Mono County’s integrated Health and Human Services Department. Reporting to the Department Director, the role provides strategic, operational, fiscal, and personnel leadership for complex programs including public assistance, employment services, child protective services, adult and senior services, and the Public Guardian and Public Administrator functions.
