Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws and affecting municipal government.
  • Writing sample must be provided at time of application.
  • Graduation from a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association with a Juris Doctor degree.
    • Copy of degree or official sealed transcript, must accompany the application. Transcripts can be sent to jdamron@cityofwarren.org directly from the school.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of extensive experience practicing law, including at least ten (10) year of municipal experience.
  • Ten (10) years of State and Federal trial practice, appellate practice and representation before administrative tribunals.
  • Experience must include several of the following; civil or criminal trials, administrative hearings, code enforcement, environmental and land use, public contracts, public purchasing, environmental and land use, public finance, real estate, employment law, advising clients on complex and highly visible matters, trial experience and staff supervisory experience.
  • A valid Michigan Driver’s License. Driving record must meet City’s standards for insurability.

Job Description

The City of Warren is accepting applications for the position of City Attorney. The City Attorney is the chief legal officer of the City of Warren responsible for a wide variety of complex legal matters affecting the city.
The administrative head of the Department of Law shall be the City Attorney, who shall be directly responsible to the City Council. The City Attorney shall perform the following duties:
  • No board or officer shall employ or retain special counsel in any matter relating to the affairs of the city without first securing the approval of such employment or retainer by the council.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Considerable knowledge of state and federal law and its practical application in a variety of specialties of municipal law, including contract law, real estate law, and other typical municipal matters, as well as considerable skill, experience and proficiency in presentation and arguments of civil and criminal trial cases.
  • Extensive experience in State of Michigan municipal law, including state and federal trial practice, appellate practice and representation before administrative tribunals, and experience as former jurist, or city attorney of large Michigan municipality.
