Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with major course of work in business administration, public administration, public policy, economics, finance, accounting, urban studies, information technology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in preparing and managing budgets.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.

Qualifications (preferred):

  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated connections within the local Detroit-based organizations that address or advocate for the needs of typically underserved populations.
  • Familiarity with immigration laws, programs, and federal requirements.
  • Demonstrated skills around high-level organizational coordination, problem-solving, and outcomes-driven process planning.

Job Description

Under the general direction of the Housing and Revitalization Director (or designee), the Immigration Affairs Officer is responsible for developing, leading, and overseeing initiatives, projects, staff and grant activities associated with the Office’s scope of work. Additional responsibilities include managing the coordination of a network of service providers to advance the directives of the administration, advocate for inclusive and restorative policies and practices, and further expand service networks to meet the needs of the city’s immigrant populations.

Examples of Duties

  • Act as a trusted advisor to public officials regarding the status of immigrant affairs in the City of Detroit, guiding strategic decisions.
  • Serve as liaison between the City and the immigrant and refugee community.
  • Develop and implement rapid response strategies for issues affecting immigrant communities.
  • Ensure the Immigration Affairs Office is prepared for rapid and coordinated responses to issues, working with internal teams and external partners.
  • Anticipate the City’s needs, manage complex projects and lead with integrity.
  • Manage and/or assist with the development and progress of department-wide goals, metrics and strategic planning to execute initiatives and make appropriate adjustments when necessary.
  • Oversee budget allocation and financial management, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Manage procurement processes, contracts, and vendor relationships to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Ensure full compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage staff, develop goals, establish performance requirements and conduct performance evaluations.
