Job Description

The Denver Public Library (DPL) is a growing urban library system that serves the City & County of Denver. DPL sees more than 4 million visitors every year across its 27 locations, serves Denver’s most vulnerable communities through outreach and mobile services, hosts thousands of programs a year and manages a collection of more than 1.4 million physical and digital materials. We believe a strong library is vital for a strong community. DPL is committed to serving the evolving needs of Denverites through inspired programming, diverse collections, culturally-representative spaces and equitable policies & procedures.

The Community Technology Center (CTC) is the technology access and training hub for Denver Public Library and is located at the Central Library. The Community Technology Center consists of two technology classrooms, two one-on-one consultation rooms, a digital media lab and makerspace, and a large public access computing area with 100+ computers. The supervisor in this role will lead a team of u The Central Library is located in downtown Denver and welcomes a wide variety of customers of all ages and backgrounds, and the CTC strives to create an inclusive environment for people to connect with and learn about technology. In a single shift, CTC staff might help someone create their first email address or record their own song. In addition to offering technology programs at the Central Library, CTC staff also offer tech services at other DPL branches and local community organizations.

What You’d Do

DPL is hiring a Community Technology Center Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of the CTC, including the Central Library’s ideaLAB makerspace. This role will lead delivery of digital inclusion services at the Central Library, with a commitment to ensuring anyone in Denver has the ability to use computers and the internet for free with limited barriers. The supervisor will lead a team of CTC staff to help customers navigate technology. CTC customers include DPL priority populations: BIPOC, vulnerable youth, people who are digitally isolated, unemployed, unhoused, immigrants, refugees, and older adults. The CTC Supervisor will work closely with DPL digital inclusion colleagues to plan, coordinate and evaluate technology programs for the Denver community.

The CTC supervisor will select, train, and motivate a team of CTC staff. Team supervision includes setting job standards and objectives, appraising performance, and creating and maintaining work schedules to cover multiple service points. The CTC team is highly collaborative, meets frequently, and works together to iteratively improve technology services. The supervisor role includes frequent coaching and staff development in areas such as how best to welcome and encourage reluctant technology users, or de-escalate frustrated customers. When it comes to technology, this is a team of broad navigation rather than deep expertise, and the CTC supervisor needs appreciation for what technology access can do to improve lives more than any particular tech expertise. The CTC supervisor can anticipate leading the team through significant change over the first year, including relocating the primary service point as the Central Library renovation continues.

CTC staff work on projects with system-wide impact – for example, leading staff training for printing services for library visitors – and the CTC supervisor frequently collaborates with colleagues in support of Library strategic initiatives. The CTC supervisor will work closely with other Central departments and branch libraries, as well as outside community organizations, to build relationships that support and expand library services and programs.
