Job Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of cash handling and customer service experience, or another relevant field.
  • Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • May be required to obtain a Montana commercial driver's license**.
  • Landscaping, nursery and/or operating light equipment (forklift, bobcat, etc.) experience, preferred.
  • OSHA or other safety program experience, preferred.

Join us in continuing this vital work – your contribution matters!  Come and be part of our team as a Green Waste Inspector and perform a variety of tasks in the production of compost for the City of Missoula Wastewater Division.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide customer service to the public.
  • Process payments of cash, checks and credit/debit cards; operate a computerized cash register and maintain sales records.
  • Receive green waste drop off, inspecting loads to ensure compliance with acceptable waste rules; load compost.
  • Perform general facility and landscaping maintenance.
  • Direct traffic according to site layout.
  • Operate various hand tools and power equipment including, small front-end loaders, and two-way radios.
  • Assist in light equipment maintenance, including lubrication and service of equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of office policies, procedures, and practices, including cash handling, and reconciliation.
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote and interpret safe work practices and ensure compliance with City and department safety policies, Montana Safety Bureau, and OSHA standards and guidelines.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Skill in multitasking in a fast-paced environment, while providing effective customer service.
  • Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
  • Skill in operating office equipment, various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365, and the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.
  • Ability to operate small power equipment, hand tools, and light equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.
  • Ability to learn City and departmental policies, procedures, and practices, including Missoula Municipal Code, and other state and federal regulations related to solid waste management and compost operations.

Working Conditions: 

  • Position requires the ability to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. or less.
  • Work environment may include exposure to unavoidable weather conditions, occupational hazards, chemicals, biohazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, or high traffic areas, which require following basic safety precautions.
