  • Seven or more years of experience in code enforcement, construction inspection, or related field or any combination of education and experience that would qualify the individual for registration as a Building Official, Building Inspector, and Plan Reviewer under the rules of Act 54 of the Public Acts of 1986.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's License.
  • Licensure by the State of Michigan as a Building Official, Plan Reviewer, and Building Inspector.
  • Knowledge of city buildings and related codes, zoning, and ordinances
  • Knowledge of the public management principles and techniques utilized in managing operations and personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, coworkers, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and interpret plans, diagrams, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of others.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with builders, architects, planners, property owners, the public, other professional contacts, and municipal officials.

Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Community Services Director acts as the City’s Building Official, providing the issuance of related permits and the licensing of contractors within the City to protect the health and safety of the public. Provides inspection service, plan reviews, code interpretation, and overall supervision and coordination of the building services. Provides assistance to citizens and performs a variety of administrative and technical functions involved in the inspection of structures and the enforcement of building codes. The employee in this position uses independent discretion and judgment in performing work within the guidelines set forth by statutory requirements, department policies, and procedures.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receives Building permit applications.
  • Review site plans, specifications, and blueprints of new construction and structures undergoing remodeling, for compliance with building codes and ordinances.
  • Oversees the activities of the departmental inspectors and other staff. Provides supervision and direction, assists in defining code requirements, and assures proper documentation and records are maintained.
  • May conduct on-site inspections on newly constructed, remodeled, and existing structures examining construction plans and working closely with contractors, building owners, architects, and engineers, to determine compliance and enforce codes.
  • Explains, interprets, and provides guidance regarding all applicable building codes and planning issues to architects, engineers, contractors, developers, property owners, the public, and municipal officials. Provides assistance, responds to requests, and resolves complaints.
  • Attends Construction Board of Appeals meetings and provides technical and administrative support as required.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with peer agencies and other governmental units to coordinate the building functions. Keeps abreast of professional developments in the building field and attends conferences, workshops, and seminars as appropriate.
  • Prepares technical and administrative reports.
  • Assists in preparing the departmental budget.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
