Chief Building Official

Education and Experience:

• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Project Management, or equivalent; and
• Minimum 5 years’ direct building experience in a municipal or county government setting, and Minimum 2 years’ supervisory responsibility; or any equivalent combination of education and experience; and
• Minimum ICC certification as Building Inspector, Building Code Specialist, or Building Plans Examiner required; ICC certification as Combination Building Inspector or Certified Building Official preferred.
• Must be willing to obtain further education, training, and certifications as deemed appropriate and within timeframe as established by the employer.

Gretna, Nebraska is a booming City of the First Class located in Sarpy County and the Omaha Metro. With the expansion of the City’s corporate limits and the consistent residential, commercial, and industrial development, the City is seeking a highly skilled person to direct the operations and activities of the Building function within the Development Services Department. The Chief Building Official is directly responsible for supervision of staff, functionality of all aspects of the building function, management of the code enforcement process, and performance of senior-level professional work.

This position is accountable for various administrative and managerial duties including promoting exceptional customer service among staff and through the application of processes, ensuring adherence to all City policies, procedures and codes, and coordinating land development activities with the department director.

Candidates must demonstrate exceptional customer service skills while ensuring compliance with adopted codes and regulations; must be a self-starter who is purposeful in forming positive, respectful relationships; must perform a variety of credentialed review and inspection services.
