  • Age: Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Vision:  Corrected: 20/20; Strong Eye Corrected: 20/20; Weak Eye Corrected: 20/60.
  • Education/Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D. required. Two-year college degree preferred.
  • Physical/Medical: Weight must be proportionate to height. Successful applicants must pass the P.O.S.T. physical agility test, the P.O.S.T. medical/vision/hearing examination, drug test, polygraph, and a psychological evaluation prior to appointment.
  • Background: A thorough background investigation will be conducted on successful applicants identified for possible appointment.
  • Lateral applicants: Must meet all Idaho P.O.S.T. requirements and have successfully completed a P.O.S.T. certified basic academy including an out of state equivalent and are experienced police officers who have worked for other municipal, county, or state agencies completing a probationary period and having a minimum of twenty-four (24) of full-time employment in either a patrol or investigative capacity. The 24 months may include academy and field training time. Corrections, reserve officer, security officer, and federal officer experience does not fulfill our requirement for certified police experience needed as a lateral applicant. A photocopy of your P.O.S.T. certificate must be attached to your application at the time of submission.

Job Description

The City of Coeur d’Alene is offering a $10,000.00 hiring bonus for the next (8) lateral officers hired in the fiscal year 2022-2023.  Eligible applicants must have at least two (2) years of experience as a sworn peace officer with a state, county, or municipal law enforcement agency, who currently hold at least a basic certificate from the State’s certifying agency (P.O.S.T.), and who are currently employed as a law enforcement officer or who have left such employment in good standing within the last two (2) years.  Upon hire, a $5,000 payment would be made in the first regularly scheduled paycheck, and $5,000 would be paid once employed for one (1) year.  All payments would be in gross wages and subject to applicable withholdings.
A Police Officer performs law enforcement and crime prevention to further the criminal justice process by patrolling an assigned area to observe, monitor, and enforce a wide array of ordinances, laws, and statutes. Interacts with the general public on a regular basis to provide educational, investigative, and related police services with the goal of preventing crime, ensuring public safety, and developing positive police-citizen relationships. Officers may also be assigned to specialized law enforcement duties such as investigations, training, school resource officer, drug task force, code enforcement, firearm and range training, Traffic Unit, crowd control, SWAT Team or other assignment.

Current Lateral Police Officer applicants will receive an entry hourly wage of $30.45 to $42.88 based on the approved lateral hire program that is dependent on previous sworn experience and agency size. Additional pay is available for educational incentive, shift differential, holiday pay, etc.

Patrol Division personnel work 10-hour-and-40-minute shifts in a 28-day work cycle, during which officers work five days and have four days off. Officers have five days off every third rotation. An excellent benefits package is available and membership in the Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho (PERSI) and Social Security is required.
